‘Pub prices up and quality down’

A merger to create Britain’s largest pub chain could see the price of a pint “soar”, reports the Daily Star.

Ei Group wants to merge with Slug and Lettuce operator Stonegate to build a company with around 5,000 pubs.

However, the Competition and Markets Authority is worries that the £1.3 billion deal could push up the cost of drinks and reduce customer choice in towns where pub groups face limited competition.

In addition, with less competition, customers could be faced with lower quality drinks and service.
