New beer marks strongest in brewery’s range

Theakston has unveiled a new beer, the 6.5% Special Reserve, which makes it the strongest ale in the brewery’s range.

The beer will make its debut through a national listing in Morrisons this month and is described as a “beautifully full, rounded and great tasting ale”.

It was brewed in Masham, using fresh Fuggle hops, which gives the traditional ale a delightful subtle fruitiness.

It will be available in the off-trade, with Waitrose also to be listing the new product in November, and is pitched as an ideal accompaniment to strong flavoured foods, such as strong cheeses like Blue Wensleydale.

Simon Theakston, chairman of T&R Theakston, said: “As a brewery with almost 200 years of experience crafting legendary beers, we pride ourselves on staying true to our heritage while creating beers that people want to drink.

“Modern consumers are returning to classic styles of British ale ones which match their higher ABV value with distinctive rich and smooth flavour profiles.

“So it felt the right time to create something unique for our off-trade customers with Special Reserve, a drink that celebrates both the high quality ingredients we use and the skills of our brewers in every sip.”

The managing director at Theakston is Richard Bradbury, who has overseen consecutive years of growth at the Yorkshire business.

And as the storied brewery prepares for its bicentenary in 2027, he’s an enthused as ever about beer, brewing and the people that make it all happen. You can read our interview with him right here.
