“Watershed” moment for drinks packaging to launch

A new can that utilises a push-button-activated chemical reaction to rapidly chill room-temperature beverages is to launch.

The technology, Cool>Can, is being described as a “watershed” moment for drinks packaging and is claimed to produce a temperature drop of around 10–15°C depending on the starting temperature.

The reaction only uses water and a patented salt-based coolant, which also means the can is fully recyclable.

The new technology that will launch at London Packaging Week, is from deltaH Innovations and the company partnered with Wales-based Brains Brewery to bring their Bayside Welsh Lager to market in a fully recyclable self-cooling can.

James Vyse, the founder and CEO of deltaH Innovations, explained: “Up until now, we’ve been sending and discussing prototypes, but what we’ll actually be presenting is the first Cool>Can in a commercial partnership, with the brand actually on the can.

“It’s a huge leap from technical development and towards mainstream market adoption.”
