Why smarter water treatment is crucial for modern breweries

Breweries of all sizes are rethinking how they use, treat and reuse water. In today’s brewing industry, sustainability, efficiency and quality control are critical to long-term success. Here Grundfos Water Treatment explain how the right water treatment can help you future-proof operations, reduce waste and ensure product consistency.

With increased pressure on global water resources, breweries are being asked tough questions by regulators as well as consumers about their water use and sustainability goals.

Rising water costs, regional scarcity and tightening effluent regulations are making water management not just a technical issue, but a strategic one. Questions about how water is sourced, treated and reused are critically important in brewery design and operation.

Water chemistry affects everything – from mash pH and yeast performance to the flavour, mouthfeel and shelf life of the final product. A consistent water profile is essential for quality assurance, especially in multi-site operations or seasonal brewing.

This is where intelligent treatment systems come into play. By ensuring control over hardness, mineral content and microbiological stability, modern water technology enables brewers to replicate their ideal water profile regardless of source variations or supply fluctuations.

Water treatment innovations

The last decade has seen exciting advancements in water treatment that offer both technical and economic benefits for brewers.

There is reverse osmosis (RO) for precise water customisation. RO systems can remove up to 99% of dissolved salts and contaminants, allowing brewers to start with a ‘blank slate’ on which to build their ideal brewing recipe, which is especially useful with hard or unpredictable water sources.

Modular and skid-mounted systems have improved install times and lowered costs. Integrated controls and advances in membrane technology have helped increase water efficiency.

Smart filtration for clarity and cleanliness: Filtration systems remove solids, bacteria and organic matter and are essential for wash water reuse, CIP (clean-in-place) processes and protecting downstream equipment. Combined with Grundfos e-Pumps we can maintain production throughput and improve efficiency.

Water softening and conditioning for equipment longevity: Hard water leads to limescale buildup, reducing the efficiency of boilers, heat exchangers and other vital systems.

Softening improves energy use and reduces maintenance downtime: High efficiency softeners with controlled brining or brine recovery reduce water and salt usage. Conditioning can also provide benefits in a suitable application.

Automated monitoring and digital integration: Digital sensors, flow meters and other cloud-connected devices enable the real-time monitoring of water quality and usage. This level of control helps breweries manage consumption, avoid contamination risks and provides data for compliance and reporting.

Sustainability and circular water use

Water reuse is rapidly becoming a benchmark of responsible brewing. Whether it’s recovering rinse water for cleaning, reusing treated effluent in cooling systems, or closing the loop on utilities, circularity pays dividends.

Grundfos Water Treatment can help breweries implement reuse loops supported by safe and certified treatment systems, dramatically reducing total water footprint without compromising on hygiene or product integrity.

We’re also seeing a rise in breweries pursuing zero-liquid discharge (ZLD) goals. While ambitious, these targets are increasingly achievable through a combination of ultrafiltration, evaporation and advanced oxidation.

We work to ensure that every brewery – whether it’s producing 1,000 or 100,000 hectolitres annually – can access the tools they need to improve water efficiency, reduce costs and meet compliance with confidence.

While large-scale brewers often lead the way in sustainable innovation, we believe smaller craft and regional breweries can also benefit from modular and scalable water treatment solutions.

We have recently been working with the Rebellion Brewery in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, a well-established independent brewer known for its quality real ales and sustainable practices. Rebellion has implemented Grundfos RO and water softening systems to treat water from its on-site borehole, helping to ensure consistency, efficiency and longevity in its brewing operation.

As engineering manager Michael Finn explains: “Water quality is absolutely critical to the flavour and consistency of Rebellion’s beers. Using water from our own borehole gives us a sustainable supply, but it needs careful treatment.

“The Grundfos RO and softening systems give us complete confidence in our water profile day in, day out and have proven very reliable from both a performance and support perspective.”

Water treatment shouldn’t be an afterthought. The most successful brewing operations integrate water considerations from the earliest planning stages. We encourage collaboration between brewers, engineers, architects and water treatment specialists like us from the offset to ensure systems are future-proof, compliant and cost-effective.

The future of brewing will be shaped by water and energy efficiency, digitalisation and environmental responsibility. With the right water treatment systems in place, breweries can cut waste, boost quality and build resilience in a changing world.
