Yakima Valley water shutdown to end

Roza Irrigation District, which supplies water to the Yakima Valley hop region, is set to provide water on 1 June, marking the end of a three-week shutdown at the plant.

The district will commence taking water from the Yakima River in the coming days, providing water once again to the 72,000 acres of farmland in the Yakima Valley, reports Capital Press.

The Yakima Valley contains approximately 75 percent of the total United States hop acreage, with an average farm size of 450 acres (182 hectares). This accounts for more than 77 percent of the total United States hop crop.

Hop producers are hopeful the date sticks but the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation may reduce its current forecast of 44% of the normal summer water supply for junior water right holders on May 29. If so, the district may delay the startup, it was reported.

The shutdown took place to help save around 15,000 acre-feet of water, which will enable production to keep going until the end of September.
