Talk title: Reducing heat and refrigeration loads for craft breweries
Every brewery consumes steam and deploys refrigerants in brewing and packaging operations. A model 100,000 hL brewery is the basis for calculations concerning heat and refrigeration loads and subsequent discussion of various means to reduce these key energy requirements, and nonlinear scale-down of the data is shared. Sample calculations will be presented, with aa comparison against AI modeling is presented. The results of our computations help us address the never-ending challenge of reducing energy requirements at the scale of craft brewing.

This is Jaime’s second presentation to us in London, and his investigations are focused on brewery engineering and utilities. His last presentation was on CO2 requirements and recovery potential calculations from first principles. His brewing career began after brewing study in Bavaria in 1983, as a brewery engineer in London and in Ireland before returning to the USA. Jaime returned to the UK ten years later to work at Courage Berkshire Brewery, and also undertook postgraduate research at Oxford University on ultrafiltration phenomena. He served as President of the Master Brewers Association of the Americas and Chair of a large section of the American Chemical Society. His academic background beyond brewing are in chemical engineering and electrical engineering. He serves as General Manager at Alaksa Pacific Beverage Company/49th State Brewing Co. In Anchorage, since late 2024.
